Chapter 44

Knight

Yes, that was an asshole move on my part. Heading to the office without her and messaging her, knowing she was going to be late. And knowing I was going to tell her off when she came in, and that I’d see the anger on her face when I did. And I wanted to see her eyes flash and her cheeks redden. I was sure she’d slink into the room, but she marched in like she owned the place and took her seat like she didn’t have a care in the world. And I didn't miss the way she winced when her bottom hit the chair. Nor did I miss the way she kept raising her hand to her mouth as if she wanted to bite her fingernails, only to stop herself and clasp her fingers in her lap, which told me she wasn’t anywhere as composed as she was pretending to be.

For the record, it took everything in me to tear myself away from her to head to the office. I skipped my morning run with Adam, who’d only have had a knowing look on his face if I’d turned up with the sated look on my face—so I was only too happy to pass that up.

I watched her sleep in my bed and recorded it in my mind before I left. Because it's not going to happen again. I'm not going to slip up. Won't allow myself to get lost in her pussy, her skin, the touch of her fingertips on my scars, her nails digging into my shoulders, her heels into my back as she took all of me like the good girl she is.

Now, her shoulders rise and fall as she draws in a breath to compose herself, no doubt, before she turns and tips up her chin at me. "You needed something, Mr. Warren?"

I need everything you can give me and that you can’t give me, too, and that’s why I’m going to have to let you go.

"Do you have the list of women from which I can choose a wife?" I snap.

The color fades from her cheeks. "Y-you’re going through with that?"

"Of course, I am. In fact, I’ve decided I should marry within the next week."

Her gaze widens. "The next week?"

"Enough of this faffing around, it’s time to get on with my plan."

"But—" She swallows. "But I thought that—"

"Because I fucked you, I’m not going to marry someone else?"

She winces.

"You weren't bad, especially for someone who’s so inexperienced, but your pussy isn’t made of magic that it’s going to hold me captive."

She firms her lips. "You took my virginity, you bastard."

"Do you expect me to write a poem about it?"

"I expect you to—" She shakes her head. "I don’t know what I expected, but it wasn’t this."

"It’s good to be surprised. It keeps you on your toes. Keeps you alert and aware. Makes you a good employee."

She draws herself up to her full height. "If I had a choice, I wouldn’t be working for you."

"If I had had a choice, I wouldn’t have employed you, but here we are."

She searches my features. "I don’t understand why you paid for my mother to stay in her home."

"Because I could?" I raise a shoulder. "Don’t go reading anything into it. It was a way of buying your loyalty."

"You mean using it to blackmail me, don’t you?"

"What-fucking-ever." I stifle a fake yawn. "We done? I have an important meeting to go to.”

She visibly reddens, then turns and begins to stomp out. "Don’t forget to email me the list of potential candidates, Ms. Easton."

* * *

"Black is my favorite color." The thin woman with the scrunched-up face and lips so big they are, clearly, botoxed looks at me with a glint in her eyes.

I finish the last piece of my steak, then lean back with a sigh. "Are you sure you don’t want to eat your"—I gesture to her plate with the pile of greens on it, without dressing, as she’d requested—"uh, whatever that is."

"Oh, no, I’m not hungry." She glances down at the remnants of the meal on my plate then back at my face. "Not at all."

"And why do you want to marry me?"

"Uh, I have the bloodline. My fifth cousin is a distant relation to the Prince of Wales. Also, I know how to throw a party for a thousand people, and how to command a retinue of servants and—"

"Get gone."

"Excuse me."

I jerk my chin in the direction of the door.

Her jaw drops. "You’re joking?"

I stare at her. She swallows, then rises to her feet and stomps off.

"Which one was that?" Adam drawls as he slips into the vacated seat.

"Does it matter?" I growl.

"I’ll tell you; that was the last candidate on your shortlist."

"You trying to run my life for me?"

He raises a shoulder. "You trying to run from the reality that’s been staring you in the face all this time?"

"What’s that?"

"That you have the perfect nominee for the role, but you refuse to acknowledge it."

"Huh?" I narrow my gaze on him. "What are you talking about?"

"The woman who could be pregnant with your child as we speak," he murmurs.

"Hold on. The only woman I’ve slept with since I returned is—" my voice trails off.

"Exactly." He tilts his head. “Did you use protection?”

Realization sinks into my bones. I sit back in my seat. "Fuck."

"You did not, and you have to pay the consequences, my friend."

"She was a virgin," I say slowly. And I didn’t ask her if she was on birth control. Of course, she might be, but I didn’t check. And who was I to assume she wanted unprotected sex? I didn’t even think of using a condom. How could I be this careless? It didn’t cross my mind until Adam bought it up, which shows how distracted I’ve been by her. All the more reason to keep my distance from her. Except—if she is pregnant with my child, then—

"Looks like you got ahead of the game. After all, the deal with your father was for you to marry in the next month and produce an heir in the next year, so things are going according to plan." Adam reaches for the bottle of water on the table and takes a swig. Asshole’s sworn off alcohol. Good for him. Wish I had the same restraint. But the booze is the one thing helping me forget—other than when I’m deep inside her and the noises in my head recede. And now, I have to find out if I’m paying the price for being addicted to her.

Adam places the bottle back on the table, then wipes the back of his hand over his mouth. "So, what are you going to do about it, hmm?"

Penny

"I’m coming! Jesus, if you bang on the door anymore, it’s going to break, you—" I throw open the door to the apartment I share with Mira, and freeze. There, framed in the doorway, with his shoulders filling the breadth of the entrance, wearing a suit, with his tie half-done and hair disheveled, is a very pissed off looking Sir.

He glowers at me. I shiver, then force myself to not do the obvious and drop to my knees, even though everything in me wants to when he glares at me with that look in his eyes that’s so damn sexy and dominant and hot.

Why is he so hot?

"The lock on the front door is broken," he snaps.

"The landlord hasn’t gotten around to fixing it yet," I admit.

"And you opened the door without checking who it was."

"It’s you, so—" I raise a shoulder.

"It could have been someone else, someone who you didn’t know, someone who—"

"Was out to hurt me? Well, you hurt me, so it’s best you stay out then." I try to close the door, but he plants his foot in the doorway. I blow out a breath. "What do you want, Mr. Warren?"

"We need to speak."

"I don’t want to talk to you."

"You’re my employee—"

"In the office. Here, I’m not."

"Your contract requires you to work for me around the clock.”

"Eh?" I blink.

He shakes his head. "That pesky fine print again, huh? Should have read it all before you signed it." He steps forward.

I release the door, and he brushes past me, leaving that sea-breeze and pepper scent in his wake. My stupid nipples perk up, and my pussy—well, I confess, I’ve been wet since I opened the door and saw him. He prowls into the living room, which seems to shrink with him in the space. He’s drawn in all the oxygen, leaving me gasping for air. He glances around, then back at me. "Are you pregnant?"

"What?" My jaw drops.

He shuffles his feet. "We, uh… I didn’t use a condom."

I shut the door and lean against it for support.

Shit, shit, shit.

He’s right. And he came inside me. And I loved it and— "Oh, god." I press my knuckles to my mouth.

His jaw tightens. "I take it you aren’t on birth control?"

I shake my head. "Never needed to use it before."

His chest rises and falls, then he draws himself up to his full height. "Pack a bag. You’re moving in with me."

"Excuse me?" I gape at him.

"You heard me. Not going to repeat myself."

"You’re crazy," I burst out.

"And you might be carrying my child."

Any remaining blood drains from my features. He’s right though. I could be pregnant. Right now. With Sir’s child. I place my hand on my belly. His gaze drops there, and a nerve pops at his temple. "We’re getting married."

"What?" I gasp.

"Not for real, of course. I need a wife and an heir. And if you’re pregnant, you deliver on the second, pun intended. As for the first, you only have to pretend for the next year."

"A year?"

"Long enough for the union to be seen as legitimate by my father. Long enough for him to have signed over the company to me."

"And if I’m not pregnant?"

He blinks as if that possibility didn’t occur to him. "Well, then, I can simply pump you full of my cum until you are."

I wince. "Must you be so crude?"

"Just stating a fact." He looks around, then heads inside.

"What are you doing?"

"Since you don’t seem inclined to pack, thought I might do it for you."

He steps into the hallway, looks around, then heads in the direction of my bedroom.

“Wait, how did you know which room was mine?” I burst out.

In reply, he wrenches open the door and steps inside. I rush behind him, and when I enter the room, it’s to find him picking up my bottle of perfume from the dressing table and sniffing it. "Roses, with notes of caramel; all I had to do was follow the scent.”

"Give that back." I go to snatch it, but he holds it out of reach. "Unusual combination."

"I’m an unusual woman."

"I’ll give this back if you hold out your left hand."

"Wh-a-a-t?" I manage to keep my jaw from dropping. "I’m not doing any such thing."

"In which case…" he begins to pocket the bottle and I almost stomp my feet. This man has the power to piss me off like no one else.

"Give me back my perfume," I hiss.

"Hold out your left hand first," he growls.

I hesitate.

His glare deepens. "I could order you to do it and we both know you’ll obey me. So, can we both stop pretending you’re not going to do what I want?"

I stiffen, attempt to hold his gaze for a few seconds more, then huff. I hold up my left hand, palm outstretched. He places the bottle back on the dressing table, then slides his hand into his pocket and pulls out a ring. A ring? What the—? I begin to pull back my hand, but he’s caught it in his. He turns my palm over and slips the ring onto my finger.

"Oh, my god!" There’s a gasp from the doorway. I turn to find Mira staring.

"It’s not what it seems." I attempt to pull back my hand, but he tugs on my arm. I fall into him.

He wraps his arm about my waist, then turns to face her. "It’s exactly what it seems.”

"Are the two of you engaged?" Mira cries.

"No, we’re not," I protest.

"Yes, we are," he says at the same time.

I scowl up at him. He looks down at me with a bland expression on his features. "The wedding will be five days."

"Five days?" I exclaim in horror.

"Five days?" Mira scoffs. "Who gets married so quickly after the engagement?"

The Bosshole does, apparently. Only, I’m not having it. I try to wriggle away, but his hold around me tightens. I’m hauled against him so I can feel every hard plane of his body dig into my side. "What are you doing?" I hiss.

"Following the plan I devised to gain control of my father’s company—which will soon be mine."

"I want nothing to do with it," I lower my voice, so Mira can’t hear the conversation.

"You’ve been pivotal in executing the plan since you became my employee. And now,

you’re

the plan, it seems." He looks at me strangely.

"What?"

"If you don’t agree and come home with me, I’ll withdraw the funds I deposited for your mother’s stay in the home."

"You can't do that." I swallow.

"Try me." He holds my gaze, and in his, I see the utter conviction that he’s willing to follow through with his threat.

"I hate you," I saw in a low voice.

"So do I," he agrees.

Wait, did he say he hates himself?

"Wha—"

He places a finger over my mouth. "Hush now. I know how excited you are, but perhaps we should head to my place where we can talk more without disturbing your roommate?"

"Oh, no, now—" Mira shakes her head. "I’m in no hurry for you to leave. In fact, I’m finding this entire proceeding rather entertaining—" She coughs. "I mean, it’s enlightening. I mean… uh, it’s so romantic that the two of you only met and now you’re getting married. And I stopped believing in love at first sight, too."

"It was more like hate at first sight," I snarl.

"First hate, then love. All that chemistry that swirls between the two of you—" Mira fans herself with the palm of her hand. "I knew I sensed it, but I thought it was all in my head."

"It was." I nod.

"It was all true." He nods.

My eyes shoot daggers at him, and he cups my cheek. Douchebag cups my cheek and stares soulfully into my eyes. "You know what I thought the first time I saw you?"

"What?" I narrow my gaze on him.

"That you were the most striking, most beautiful, most sensuous woman I’d ever met ,and that no one else could ever compare to you."

I hear Mira sigh.

"And when you looked at me, it was the first time—the only time—in my life I felt nervous."

"You felt—nervous?" I blink.

"I knew my life would never be the same again. I knew everything as I knew it was going to change. I knew my future had arrived and that I had to find the courage to reach out and grab it. I knew if I didn’t hold onto you, I’d never forgive myself."

"You did?" I ask, unable to keep the suspicion from my voice.

He snatches up my left hand and brings it to his mouth, then kisses the ring.

Mira makes an "awwww" noise.

I ignore her and focus on the conniving man in front of me. He doesn’t play fair. He was willing to pay millions to the woman who agree to play the role of his wife and bear him a child, and all to ensure his plan of taking over his father’s company comes to fruition. He’ll never let anything get in his way. That’s why he threatened to rescind the funding of my mother's care unless I worked for him.

He doesn’t mean anything he says. He doesn’t.

And yet, when I search his features, I only see sincerity in his eyes.

Huh?

He twines his fingers through mine, then takes my other hand in his and holds both of my palms between his. The warmth from his touch seeps into my blood. My heart skitters, and my stomach flutters. A shivery feeling coils in my belly. He’s playing a part. That’s all it is. I may have gone to drama school, but he’s the consummate actor here.

Then he goes down on one knee. "Penelope Mary Easton, will you be my wife?"
